David stood frozen in the middle of his parents’ meticulously tidy living room. The room itself was a monument to order, yet he felt as if the world was shifting beneath his feet. He had found the letter in a box of old photographs. His father's letter of resignation from the army, dated a month before he died.

His hands shook as he read it. He knew it was the truth that the family had not wanted him to have. The words were terse, devoid of emotion, but the implications were devastating. Why did he leave? What had happened? The living room, usually a haven of calm, suddenly felt oppressive.

He paced the room, his agitation growing with each step. He could not bring himself to leave, not until he figured this out. He felt like he was trapped in a room with invisible walls.
